About Us

Lake Stevens Memorial American Legion Post was chartered in 1947 with the help of current members Tuver Schwarzmiller, USN (WWII), Frank Mobius, USN (WWII), and recently deceased Harry Whitford, USMC (WWII). We do not have our own building at this time, but we do hold regular monthly meetings on the 4th Thursday of each month at 7:00 P.M.:

Lake Stevens Senior Center
1812 - 124th Ave NE (Main Street)
Lake Stevens, Washington 98258

The Senior Center is the building behind the flags at the War Memorial and right next to City Hall.

Are you new to the area? We welcome transfers from other posts and also new members! Membership is open to almost all U.S. military veterans. A veteran must have an honorable discharge, and served with any branch of service (Navy, Marines, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine) at least one day during the following dates:

April 6, 1917 to November 11, 1918 (World War I)
December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946 (World War II)
June 25, 1950 to January 31, 1955 (Korean War)
February 28, 1961 to May 7, 1975 (Vietnam War)
August 24, 1982 to July 31, 1984 (Lebanon/Grenada)
December 20, 1989 to January 31, 1990 (Operation Just Cause - Panama)
*August 2, 1990 to today (Operation Desert Shield/Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom,
Operation Iraqi Freedom, Global War on Terrorism)

National Guard and any reserve personnel are eligible if they served just one day under any federal orders during these same dates. Currently serving military are also eligible.

Dues for membership in Post 181 are now $40.00 per membership year. The 2007 membership year dues began July 1, 2006 and should already be paid for this 2007 year. If you have not yet paid, you can send your dues to our PO Box 475 in Lake Stevens, or email Adjutant Tom Thorleifson at LSAmericanLegion@comcast.net if you have questions.

We currently have about 150 members representing each wartime era. We have several new members and several recent transfers. We have been growing steadily from about 75 members two years ago. Our Post 181 has been recognized by the Department of Washington (state) American Legion for being the first post to reach the established membership goal for the 2006 membership year. This year we have again reached 100% and again surpassed our previous all-time high membership. We are also active in our community. We do have members who live outside the Lake Stevens area, including a few "Snowbirds" who live down in the sunny climates during our dreary winters. Come to our next event and introduce yourself so we can get to know each other!
